Rethinking Your Strategy in Mage Arena PVP

It is hard to gain respect as a player in Mage Arena PvP.  You are, after all, a squishie, and a poorly played Mage melts under pressure faster than the block of ice he’s hiding in.  However, with a good Mage Arena guide you can learn what it takes to bring on the Mage pwnage.  Whether you need help choosing your Mage Arena spec or are hoping to find some Mage Arena strategy, here is what you need to know.

Your Mage Arena spec

If you are like most players, you probably leveled up your Mage using the Fire spec.  Nothing says “ding!” faster than a few well-timed fireballs.  But when it comes to Mage Arena PvP action, you might want to rethink your strategy.  Often, a better Mage Arena spec goes with Frost or even Arcane and mix up your Mage Arena strategy.

So what’s the difference?  Generally speaking, the Frost Mage Arena spec is used to increase your survivability in the Arena, whereas the Arcane spec is designed to increase your damage capabilities and bring on the Mage pwnage.

Finding your place

While you can read a Mage Arena guide to learn how to fight against other classes, figuring out your personal Mage Arena strategy can take some time.  Mage Arena PvP is an entirely different game than sheeping a couple of bosses in the instances.  Remember, for as hard as you are trying to bring on the Mage pwnage, there’s another player on the other side of the screen trying just as hard to pawn you.

It is important to remember that the strongest Mage Arena strategy is to work with your team.  Arena is not the time to play a hero.  Don’t allow the other team to kite you away from your group, and never try to get up close and personal with your opponents.  Doing so is a sure recipe for disaster.

In many cases, the Mage pwnage is only as good as your sheep.  If you can take one of the opposing team out of the game, you drastically improve the odds for your team to win.  Many Mage Arena guides will tell you to sheep the healer, as this will allow you to take down their teammates unhindered (keep in mind that you will likely need to re-sheep if they have a trinket).

However, you don’t have to have the healer be your only target.  Sheeping the warrior or other major damage dealer in the group can allow you to take out the weaker players first, than attack as a group on the strongest player.  Allow your team’s personal strategy to be your Mage Arena guide.

Set yourself up to win

All of the Mage Arena guides in the world and best laid out Mage Arena strategy will not help you if you are not prepared to win. Make sure that your team has Vent or other speaking capabilities. Set up your UI so that you can see the other team, and make sure that your key bindings are good to go.  That way, once the battle has started, you know that you have everything ready at your disposal. A deeper understanding of mage arena pvp can do you more good.
