Rethinking Your Strategy in Mage Arena PVP

It is hard to gain respect as a player in Mage Arena PvP.  You are, after all, a squishie, and a poorly played Mage melts under pressure faster than the block of ice he’s hiding in.  However, with a good Mage Arena guide you can learn what it takes to bring on the Mage pwnage.  Whether you need help choosing your Mage Arena spec or are hoping to find some Mage Arena strategy, here is what you need to know.

Every expansion brings changes for the various WoW classes, and Mages may have gotten some of the best upgrades of the game. While no one can guarantee that they won’t be nerfed further down the road, here is a look at some of the exciting changes Mages can look forward to.

A few new spells

Mages will earn three new spells as they level up in Cataclysm. These include:

  • Level 81: Flame Orb. Just like Prince Taldaram you will know be able to cast a flaming orb straight out in front of you. The orb will send down beams of fire damage while you are free to cast other spells. While any Mage will be able to use this spell, obviously Fire Mages will also get talents to improve it.

  • Level 83: Time Warp. This spell will be useful to the raiding Mage, granting a Haste effect that is similar to Bloodlust or Heroism to your entire party. The Mage also will see a short increase in movement speed. While you won’t get the Haste effect if you have the Exhaustion debuff, you will still get the movement-speed increase, allowing Mages yet another way to put some distance between themselves and their opponent.

  • Level 85: Wall of Fog. This spell will be ideal for the Mage looking to do some serious crowd control. The spell creates a 30 yard-long line of frost that will snare enemies and cause damage. Mages will even be able to channel Blizzard while on top of Wall of Fog. While this spell will be very costly in terms of the amount of mana needed to use it, it should create a whole new dimension to PvPing as a Mage.

New changes

Of course new spells aren’t the only things that Mages are going to see with the arrival of Cataclysm. For starters, Arcane Missiles is being redesigned so that it becomes a proc-based spell similar to Overpower for Warriors. With low mana and high damage this spell will be quite useful, particularly to low-level Mages working their way up.

Some of the less useful spells are being removed, including Amplify Magic, Dampen Magic, and some of the wards. Also don’t expect to become a vending machine for your party too early on anymore. Mages will not be able to conjure food and water until higher levels, though Blizzard promises that low level mages shouldn’t run out of mana too quickly early on.

Scorch is being edited to make it a more viable part of the Mage’s rotation. This spell will provide a damage bonus and possibly other Mage-specific benefits, and Fire Mages will of course be able to improve this spell using their talent points.

Your new talents

The internet is already abuzz with all of the new talent tree changes for all of the classes. Mages, like all the other classes, will see smaller and more concise talent trees. You will be required to spend a certain number of points in one talent tree before you can spend any points in one of the others, but you will get a Mastery bonus for completing your tree of choice.

When it comes to new talents, a few of your old familiars will be changing. If you have Arcane Focus, then you will get mana back if your spell does not hit your talent. This should give Arcane Mages more options as to how to build their character’s mana up as well as giving them a more viable spell rotation for mana management.

Playing with Fire will have its current effect changed to a reduction of Blast Wave’s cooldown if you are hit by a melee attack. Other Fire talent changes include Pyromaniac, which will grant additional Haste if you have at least three targets under the effect of a fire DoT spell, and Burnout, which will allow Mages to use their health points to cast spells if they do not have enough mana to finish the fight. While this could end up being a kamikaze spell for the Mage, it does give Mages a little more firepower in those big fights.

Mage specs and Mastery

While the three main Mage specs remain the same, players will now see some new Mastery talents to make any spec more enticing.

  • Arcane Mages will be focusing on Spell Damage and Spell Haste. Their Mastery spell is Mana Adept, which allows them to do more damage based on the amount of mana that they currently have. The more mana that is available, the more Arcane damage they can do, so in order to fully utilize this talent Arcane Mages will need to learn how to effectively balance their mana and bring it back up if they want maximum effectiveness during a fight.

  • Fire Mages will also focus on Spell Damage, but will be looking more at Spell Crit than Spell Haste. Their Mastery spell is Ignite, which will add a DoT spell to each of their direct damage fire spells. You asked for more burning, and Blizzard has brought it. The overall effect will be similar to Fireball except that you can expect a lot more bang for your buck when it comes to each tick of the DoT spell.

  • Like Fire Mages, Frost Mages will be looking for Spell Damage and Spell Crit. Their Mastery spell is Deathfrost, which will give Mages a buff whenever they cast Frostbolt. This buff will increase the damage of all spells accept for Frostbolt itself. While some players have expressed concern that this will cause Frost Mages to spam nothing but Frostbolt, experienced players will realize that doing so will waste the Deathfrost effect and will hopefully use the new Mastery skill to broaden their rotation to include more spells.

Patch 4.0.1 Introduces Mastery Rating

With all of the new changes to talent trees and Mastery which has a Mastery Rating stat in Patch 4.0.1 Blizzard made it easier to spec for any situation.

One of the new stat changes brought in to get ready for Cataclysm is Mastery Rating, a stat that can be found on the higher level gear.  Each class gets three different Mastery options, based on the spec that you go with.

Mastery rating helps increase the benefit of Mastery, a new talent specialization that can be learned from a trainer once you hit level 80.

Check out these spells for Mages:

  • Arcane Mages earn the spell Mana Adept.  This spell increases their damage based on the amount of unspent mana they have – the more mana the more damage – up to 12% and then for each Mastery point the damage increases by 1.5%.
  • Fire Mages earn the spell Flashburn.  This spell increases the damage of periodic fire spells, starting at a 20% increase and going up 2.5% for each Mastery point.
  • Frost Mages earn the spell Frostburn.  This spell increases damage against frozen targets, starting at a 20% increase and going up 2.5% for each point of Mastery.

While these spells will make your character more powerful in their chosen specialization it’s only one aspect of gameplay.
Remember that it is important to choose your character’s spec based on your playing style preferences, not necessarily the Mastery spell that will become available to you.

Reforging:  What It Is and How It Can Help Your Character

Another advantageous introduction in Patch 4.0.1 was Reforging.
A new skill that allows players to trade part of one stat on their gear for another that they find more useful, with some restrictions.
This can only be done on gear with an item level of 200 or more.

Instead, the goal of Reforging is to make more gear usable by more classes, reducing the need for disenchanting or vendoring of unwanted items.

Reforging will cost your character the same amount as it would to vendor an item.  When done, you can exchange 40% of the stat you don’t want for one that you do.  Only certain stats can be reforged, and the skill is not intended for use on every item.

Stats you can change and those you can’t

Any piece of gear that has Reforgable stats on it can be reforged, including armor, weapons, and trinkets.  However, only a select list of stats can be reforged and you can only reforge one stat at a time.  You can reforge the following stats:

  • Critical Strike Rating
  • Dodge Rating
  • Expertise Rating
  • Haste Rating
  • Hit Rating
  • Mastery Rating
  • Parry Rating
  • Spirit

You cannot reforge these stats:

  • Agility
  • Attack Power
  • Intellect
  • Resilience
  • Stamina
  • Strength

This means that there still may be some argument as to whether or not a piece of gear will be useful for your character instead of someone else, but hopefully more gear will be useable by more players.

Reforging is easy to do, however you should take care when making your decisions.  Knowing how the various stats affect your character.  While it may be tempting to take on new stats just to try them out, using up too many of your points for a new stat may not prove beneficial.

Understanding how the stats work and where the caps are will make your character stronger and more fun to play.  Consider researching the best stats for your character and spec before you make the decision to reforge. Remember that in Mastery Mastery Rating is important.

Any Mage Arena guide will tell you that Mage pwnage only occurs when you have the right gear and the right Mage Arena spec.

Otherwise, you’re just gonna be another squishie and will find yourself lying on the Arena floor before you can say “Holy Sheep.”

Most likely you will be able to find a Frost Mage Arena guide online as those seem to be a popular Mage Arena spec to play.

However, properly geared you can do Mage Arena PvP with Fire spec as well.

Mage Arena Gear

Any Mage Arena guide will tell you that your gear is of the utmost importance when it comes to Arena play.

Don’t have the gear and you might as well stay home, instead of bringing on the Mage pwnage you will be getting pawned yourself.

If you’ve been reading a Frost Mage Arena guide then you already know that Frost Mages need to increase their stats, resilience, and durability.

On the other hand, Fire Mages will want gear that improves their spell damage with bigger crit capability.

You should keep in mind that in Mage Arena PvP damage and crit as a Fire Mage are only going to work if you have top of the line gear.

If you are trying to play wearing blues and greens, or even Item Level 200 items, then the opposing team is going to wipe the floor with you.

Choosing a Mage Arena Spec

Most Mage Arena guides are going to tell you that Frost Mages are the way to go.

You can also go with Fire as a plausible Mage Arena spec, but to bring on the real Mage pwnage you will need to know how to play your character well.

While you can consult a Mage Arena guide for specific builds, basically the Mage Arena specs break down into two main differences:

  1. Frost Mages are supporting DPS and go for slow and steady damage,

  2. Fire Mages are there for quick and deadly strikes.

Talk to your teammates for an idea of what Mage Arena spec will be most beneficial for your team.

A Mage Arena Guide to your Role on the Field

Playing Mage Arena PvP needs to be done very carefully if you want to make the most of your abilities.

This means that you need to bring your PvP skills to the max if you want to bring on the Mage pwnage.

There are a few things that you must do if you want to win:

Time your Ice Block well.

Instead of trying to use Ice Block to avoid death, use it to avoid the most damages.

For example, when a fully enraged Warrior gets too close. Your cloth armor will not stand up to a Warrior in hand-to-hand combat, so block up and wait for his rage to go down.

Keep your elemental under control.

Always make sure that your elemental is on passive and that the two of you are attacking the same target.

You are there for crowd control.

People want Mages on their Arena team because they can crowd control.

Forget any Mage Arena guide that told you that you need to be doing massive DPS every second of the game and take advantage of your abilities to temporarily keep an opposing player out of the game.

Use your invisibility wisely.

This is a Mage Arena PvP spell that can work well when properly used.
